Integrated Behavioral Health
San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) is an approximately 100-bed county hospital that provides inpatient and outpatient medical and psychiatric services to low income individuals residing within San Mateo County. SMMC also manages several satellite clinics within the county.
Integrated Behavior Health (IBH) is part of SMMC’s Psychiatry Department. The clinic provides short-term evidence-based interventions in a primary care setting. IBH provides a primary care behavioral health approach to psychology, psychiatry, and medicine at SMMC (main hospital in San Mateo) and at Fair Oaks Health Center (FOHC; community clinic in Redwood City).

OUTPATIENT TRACK
Fair Oaks Health Center, Redwood City
(1 position available per training year)
- Seeking: Advanced (P4) clinical psychology students. Special consideration will be given to Spanish bilingual clinicians.
- Setting: Outpatient adult primary care clinic at Fair Oaks Health Center which services a diverse population many of whom are monolingual Spanish speaking.
- Position Details: 16 hours per week (2 days in-person), unpaid, must pass background check and health screening which includes evidence of COVID vaccinations). Anticipated start date August-September 2023. 12 month commitment.
- Services Provided and Population:
- Trainee will provide short-term treatment targeting specific issues (mental health, stressors, or health conditions) through brief intervention sessions or short-term therapy. Referral conditions include depression, anxiety, relationship problems or adjustment disorders related to patients' medical or social issues. In addition to a board range of mild to moderate psychopathology, presenting issues may include acculturation difficulties, immigration trauma, somatic complaints, access to resources or education, spirituality, difficulty maintaining tradition and family, and building community/connections. Students provide patients with short-term, evidence-based behavioral health services. Students will also gain experience providing services with the use of medical interpreters.
Additional Information:
- IBH provides linguistically- and culturally-sensitive treatment to adults with psychiatric issues in-person and via Telehealth.
- All IBH providers work with multidisciplinary teams.
- Trainee may also have opportunities to co-facilitate psychoeducational drop-in workshops provided through the outpatient IBH clinic on topics including depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, and chronic pain management (all workshops available in English with live Spanish simultaneous interpretation).
- Trainee may also co-facilitate outpatient behavioral medicine therapy groups on topics such as weight management, diabetes management, insomnia, and depression (groups may be offered in English, Spanish, or both).
- Trainee will have minimum of one-hour individual supervision per week with a licensed psychologist plus peer supervision with a postdoctoral fellow.
- There are regular opportunities to observe mental health and primary care grand round presentations outside of regular practicum hours
- As a supplemental practicum, this opportunity is meant to complement other training efforts and does not include additional group supervision, didactic lectures, or case conferences.
