Integrated Behavioral Health Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) provides an integrative approach to psychology, psychiatry, and behavioral medicine for outpatient primary care and medical specialty clinics at San Mateo Medical Center and Fair Oaks Health Center. Fellows work alongside primary care physicians, specialty providers, social workers, nurses, and medical assistants, offering comprehensive and holistic care for our patients. Typical referrals addressed by IBH are for adults with mild to moderate psychopathology and consist mainly of depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship problems, stress or adjustment disorders related to patients' medical or social issues. In general, we provide individual and group therapy as well as educational workshops, with occasional opportunities to engage in couples therapy. Our services span specialty categories of health psychology, behavioral medicine, and community mental health, whereas preferred treatment modalities are brief and evidence-based. We are privileged to work with individuals who represent diversity in race, ethnicity, age, gender, socioeconomic background, disability status, sexual orientation, and clinical severity.

The primary focus of the APPIC-accredited IBH Postdoctoral Fellowship is to train health psychologists to perform optimally in a multidisciplinary medical setting. Fellows will develop expertise in providing outpatient individual and group therapy as well as educational outreach in a primary care behavioral health context. In addition, each Fellow is expected to participate in several 6- to 12-month-long rotations (described in our training brochure), serving medical and psychiatric inpatients and outpatients. Fellows will also gain valuable experience in providing telehealth services.
Another core component of our Postdoctoral Fellowship program focuses on growth into the role of an independent psychologist. This includes promoting leadership qualities and consultation skills to further strengthen professional development. Fellows assume a leadership role alongside staff psychologists in providing trainings to medical staff and allied professionals on topics related to health psychology. Past trainings have included education on empathy, active listening, motivational interviewing, depression screening, and gender-affirming care. Fellows are also expected to conduct a presentation at San Mateo Medical Center during their training year. Another highly emphasized component of our Fellowship program is the opportunity for Fellows to gain experience in a specialty area of knowledge and practice. A distinct focus in a specialized area should reflect the Fellow’s interest(s) and can include an array of chronic diseases including chronic pain, cancer, heart disease and/or psychiatric disorders such as trauma, insomnia, depression, or anxiety.
IBH is recruiting three full-time Postdoctoral Fellows to join our multidisciplinary team for the 2020-2021 training year. These positions are suited for candidates with a Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology who have graduated from an APA-accredited academic program and have completed an APPIC-member internship. An ideal applicant will have strong clinical skills and interest in Health Psychology.
Applicants applying to our Postdoctoral Fellowship program are asked to submit application materials online via APPA CAS. (If APPA CAS fees are a hardship, please contact us to make alternative arrangements.) Questions can be directed to IBH Assistant Training Director, Dr. Simone Heron-Carmignani. All applications must include:
(a) Curriculum Vitae
(b) Letter of intent
(c) Three letters of recommendation, including at least two from clinical supervisors who are familiar with your clinical work.
(d) Unofficial transcript
IBH Postdoctoral Fellows will receive a stipend of $57,000 for the 2021–2022 training year. Fellows also have access to health care benefits, on-site fitness facility, free parking, and up to $150 monthly credit if using public transportation.
IBH thanks all applicants; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Special consideration will be given to bilingual, Spanish-speaking applicants.
